Masters Mix 2012 and 2013 Contests & PGA Championship at Kiawah Contests

Masters Mix 2013
Day Three Results:
2012 Masters Mix defending champion Steve Price leads the pack on Moving Day. Steve has put together three solid rounds and is in first place by himself. By rotating in Nick Watney on his team this year, he snagged a 68 score for today. Three of his four picks have contributed to his -11 total. Josh Scott moves from T5 to solo 2nd with his great pick of Tim Clark. That dark horse had the best round of the day in Augusta. The Blogette is hanging on in 3rd and is just 2 shots off the pace. Six players are at -8.....three shots can be made up fairly quickly on Sunday. Who will be the hot ticket in the final round?

Day Two Results:
Here at the blog, we have been waiting for the official decision regarding the ruling for Tiger Woods' score on the 15th hole yesterday. Since he has been assessed a two-stroke penalty, his 71 for Day 2 of play has been changed to a 73. This has caused a shake-up in our leaderboard and the updated version can now been seen in this post. Most notably, Jason Rader has now dropped from T1 to T5. Several others were impacted by the penalty for Tiger. Poor Brian Anderson dropped to even par. Three players (Kiel Ott, Pete Kleemoff, and Daniel Hardy) dropped to -3, and Mike "The Dude" Murphy and Bill Hahn have dropped to -2. Stay tuned as the action promises to get exciting on Moving Day at Augusta!!

Day One Results:
Six-year-old Logan Beckman, and his father Jason Rader, along with Mr. Augusta - Wes Graves were running alongside Sergio down the fairway all day. As a result, they are leading the race to our Masters Mix trophy. Sergio fired a nice round of 6-under par 66. Six players at 68 share the 2nd grouping (T4) with defending champ Steve Price. Just 3 shots back of the leaders are 10 players in our contest.

Here's your chance to meet the participants in our 2013 Masters Mix contest. This is a contest that we created for added interest as you watch the 77th Masters Tournament in Augusta this week. Each contestant in our field has chosen a player from one of four categories. For full details on how The Mix is played, see the full post that is archived. The lowest score from the four players on each "team" is posted each day and combined for a 72-hole total on the final day.

Meet the Mixers:
Sara Beckman (Hagerstown, In) - aka The Blogette. She did not win the Masters Mix 2012, but she did win big in a trivia contest in April of last year. The Blogette took down two challengers when she was in the audience at the Sports Illustrated at the Majors tent just outside the hallowed grounds of Augusta National on Saturday of tournament week. She hopes her luck then hasn't left her now.

Mike Murphy (Greenwood, IN) - This Indiana native, known as "The Big Dude", is a retired sales manager for General Wire and Cable. A big honor came for him this past year, when he caddied for Bo Van Pelt in Zach Johnson's Pro-Am in Iowa. Mike is great friends with Bo's dad. When Murph was asked how he managed carrying the bag, he replied "Hell - I drove it on a cart!".

Darlene Wendeln (Indianapolis, IN) - Recently retired, Darlene spent 30 years coaching high school tennis quite successfully. Back in the day, she and the Blogette coached volleyball together. Sadly, there is not enough space to include all of those adventures. She has also coached girls basketball, AND graded English essays while dreaming about the day she could enjoy the fall foliage on the golf course every September. She is a quite a pacer when she is anxious in a game or match, but I don't think that is where the pro basketball team got their name.
Keegan Bradley
Graeme McDowell
Bubba Watson
Matt Kuchar
274 (-14)

Stop in and see him if you're in town for the tournament and in need of the latest golf equipment to help your game.
Brandt Snedeker
Graeme McDowell
Bill Haas
Tiger Woods

Wes Graves (Augusta, GA) - Wes is still working hard on and off the course. He is hoping his golf game is better this year than last. Bubba Watson
Jim Furyk
Tiger Woods
280 (-8)

Jim Beckman (Sebring, FL) - Brother Love guzzled that gin and tonic down when the Buckeyes lost in the NCAA basketball tournament. When he said "Wait till next year", we weren't sure if he meant basketball or football season. He is trying to resolve his grief by focusing on the little white ball, and plunging head-first in the golf season and kicking it off with the following choice golfers. Jim is planning a golf trtip to the area at the end of June. He brings his own limes!

Fred Couples
Nick Watney
Zach Johnson

Masters Mix 2012
Here is your guide to understanding the Masters Mix contest. Particpants had a chance to mix and match four players in the Masters field to be on their team. At the bottom of the directions, you will see four columns of 2012 Master's Invitees. Here's how the game was played:

  • Choose one player from each column to create your team.
  • We will take the best score among your four players after round one, and post that as your Round 1 score.
  • We will take the best score among your four players after round two and combine it with your round one score. That will be posted as your Round 2 (36-hole) score.
  • At the cut, if any of your players are cut, they are out of your "mix" and off of your team. You do not get the opportunity to replace them. Therefore, if all of your players miss the cut, you are out of the contest. So sad! If only one of your players misses the cut, you continue to round three and four with only those three players. If two of your players are cut, you continue with only the two remaining players, and so on. If all of your players go on to round 3 and 4, you get to use any of their scores as your low score for the round.
  • We will continue to take your best score from among your remaining players for round three and round four to come up with a four-round total. Low score for the 72-hole total wins our contest.
  • The first tiebreaker will be your prediction for the actual 72-hole score by any player that wins the 2012 Masters. (That player does not have to be on your orignal team.)
  • Second tiebreaker your 18-hole low round score.
  • Third tiebreaker total first round scores of your four players.

MASTERS MIX RESULTS:
Sunday, April 8, 2012: Congratulations to Steve Price!! Our third round leader holds on and claims the first annual Masters Mix Championship, finishing 18 under par. David Aussicker from Charlotte, slipped into second place at -16. Wes Gentry and Jose Lagos tied for third with -15. Price, Mike Hooks, Ricky Jackson and Pete Kleemoff were all able to spot a winner before it actually happened. These guys all had Bubba Watson in their foursome. Bo Van Pelt's 64 is the second-lowest score in Majors history. His round included a hole-in-one on the 16th hole. This is especially excitng for us at the Blog because Bo, Jason Rader, and The Director are all from Richmond, IN. Adam Scott also aced the 16th, and helped a lot of our mixers move up with his 66 today. Steve wins a 2012 Invitational golf shirt, one dozen golf balls, and a Mizuno tour golf hat. He is a very deserving winner because he is a three-year Invitational player, blog sponsor, and always has been one of the first teams to sign up.

Saturday, April 7, 2012: Steve Price is our current leader all alone in the top position with 14-under-par. James Scarborough is holding down the second slot with -13, followed by four players at -12. The biggest set-back of the day belongs to Steve Smith who was tied for 12th going into this round, and is now tied for the 34th spot. Thanks Vijay Singh for shooting a 76 for Steve! To his credit, Steve is left with only two players after the cut. One of the biggest movers on Moving Day in Augusta was Phil Mickelson (-6), who assisted 13 of our mixers in getting a boost up the leaderbaord. Several of the mixers are hoping that Tiger and Rory will show up and play them into a higher position. It looks like a great day for a fantastic finish at The Masters!

Friday, April 6 2012: Five of our mixers chose Freddie Couples, who shot a blistering 67 (-5) today. Go Boom-Boom!! This helped to propel Steve Price and Marcel Sterling into a tie at 8 under at the midway point. James Scarborough is holding down solo third place. Eight mixers are just 2 shots back of the lead at -6. Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson both shot 68s to brighten the otherwise gloomy day of many of our mixers. The Blogette is hanging in there at the bottom of the ranks, and planning to move up on Moving Day. Hope everyone is enjoying the contest so far and finding this an interesting way to follow the tournament and your favorite players.

Thursday, April 5, 2012: Bubba Watson, Miguel Jimenez and Jason Dufner made the contestants who selected them very happy by posting scores of 69 today. Eight of our Masters Mixers are tied for first place, with only five shots separating the entire field. To find out who placed where, just scroll down to the next post to view our Masters Mix leaderboard. The players that everyone was counting on didn't come through for our Mixers. Those who chose Mickelson, Woods and McIlroy were disappointed by their first round scores.. Lee Westwood, the first round leader was not selected by anyone. Just goes to show, you never know about this game!

You can check out their earlier story on the blog by going to older posts about the Dream Team. We understand that Robert has worked hard in the weight room to be able to manage the big tour bag.

Darryl Phelps (Lugoff, SC) - Mr. Nice Guy has supported The Invitational tournament the past three years as a player. He loves golf and works hard at sharpening his game so he can improve his status on the course. His friends used to wonder if his recent marriage would increase the "honey-do" list and interfere with time for golf. However, his lovely bride allows him time for fun as long as he helps her with her golf game.

Ronnie Platner (Augusta, GA) - a past Invitational champion in 2009, Ronnie makes his living as a surveyor. His professional skills have come into play as a pre-tournament volunteer. Steve Price (West Columbia, SC) - this blog sponsor has been a tournament presence since the beginning. Sundance Motors takes more of his time than his golf game, but maybe that will change someday. Also known as The Shooter, Steve will shoot a good score at the course, shoot you a great price on a used car and will shoot the breeze with you at the pub. He might even buy you a shooter! Shoot!!

This year, Steve is serving on the tournament committee as Tournament Co-Chair. We couldn't do it without this go-to guy. If you're looking for a camper, stop by Camping World and look him up. Unfortunately, Wednesday's Par 3 Contest was cancelled at Augusta National due to storms in the area. How disappointing for the fans and the kids who caddy for their fathers and grandfathers. A number of players were able to complete their rounds, with Padraig Harrington and Jonathan Byrd finishing with the lowest scores posted. This may not be a good omen for those who chose them in the Masters Mix. Although, they are not technically the winners, we all know that winning the Par 3 is a jinx for the "real tournament". Anyone who picked Mark Wilson (who?) or Thomas Bjorn picked players who had a hole-in-one today. Now...If you can name the future Masters player pictured above, we have a nice prize for sending that name in (along with your own!) to johnsara@bellsouth.net. First to respond with the correct name wins!! HInt: This future phenom's name is already elsewhere on the Blog...

WE HAVE A WINNER - - - Diane Verellen from Anderson, SC (friend of the Blog) was the first to identify Logan Beckman. She wins a dozen Srixon golf balls and tour golf hat. She asked that the golf balls be donated to Logan with this remark, "If he is going to play at Augusta, he's going to need them!" Logan is the 5-year-old grandson of the Director and the Blogette, and already has a team entered in the 2027 Invitational.

2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah

In honor of the PGA Championship being held at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course, we are introducing our newest contest in which our Invitational friends select a foursome of PGA players to compete for them in the final major of the year. Contestants will select four players in the tournament field to be on their team. You will see below four columns of PGA pros playing in the final major of 2012. Here's how the game is played:
  • Choose one player from each column to create your team.
  • We will take the best score among your four players after round one, and post that as your Round 1 score.
  • We will take the best score among your four players after round two and combine it with your round one score. That will be posted as your Round 2 (36-hole) score.
  • At the cut, if any of your players are cut, they are cut from your team.
  • The first tiebreaker will be your prediction for the actual 72-hole score by any player that wins the 2012 PGA Championship. (That player does not have to be on your orignal team.)
  • Second tiebreaker your 18-hole low round score.
  • Third tiebreaker total first round scores of your four players.
  • No entry fee required!!

FINAL RESULTS: Jose Lagos, "The Super Stitcher", is the wire-to-wire champion of our PGA at the Ocean Course at Kiawah contest. The Blogette was all over the leaderboard this weekend, moving from 1st to as low as 18th. She finished in 2nd place with Daniel Hardy and Kenny Wilhelm, who made consistent showings with their selections. Poor Bad-Call Bob spent most of the weekend at the bottom of the roster, but has certainly been a good sport about it. We hope everyone enjoyed this fun and exciting way to keep up with the final Major of 2012.

THIRD ROUND RESULTS: Jose Lagos continues to lead our PGA at Kiawah contest at 11 under par. Daniel Hardy, Kenny Wilhelm and Randy Woodward are just two strokes behind at -9. Six players are within 4 shots of the lead. The weather system was the real mover on "moving day" - moving everyone off the course at a quick pace. The fourth round promises to be exciting and will provide answers to the big question - Can the Super Stitcher (Jose) be a wire to wire winner? Final results will be posted ASAP after the last putt is holed.
SECOND ROUND RESULTS: Super Stitcher Jose Lagos finds himself all alone in first place after two rounds. Eight players are tied for 2nd place one stroke behind. What a nasty day at the Ocean Course with only four PGA players managing to break par. The Blogette plummeted from T1 all the way down to solo 18th. Many of our contestants' players survived for the weekend due to the cut-line being at +6. This opens the door for any of our players to have a shot at being our contest winner. Will Tiger follow the weather....warming up for a hot round or get blown about by an ocean breeze? Check back with us after Round Three...

FIRST ROUND RESULTS: Round One results are in and The Blogette is oh-so-happy. After an embarassingly dismal showing in the Masters Mix, she is thrilled to be sharing the top-spot with Super Stitcher Jose Lagos. There is a huge knot of contestants at 68 (-4), so plenty of room for movin' and groovin' up and down the leaderboard. Sad to say, but Bad Call Bob Showalter is living up to his name in last place.

Jim Beckman (Sebring, FL) - a man known by many names - Brother Love, Uncle Buck, Brutus and Jim-Bob to name a few. He cannot wait for his Buckeyes to take the field this season. We aren't sure, but we think the main reason he travels so far to play in The Invitational is for the Bloody Marys.

Brandt Snedeker
Sergio Garcia
280 (-8)

Bubba Watson
Phil Mickelson
Brankt Snedeker
Ernie Els
287 (-1)

Wes Graves (Augusta, GA) - a member of Goshen Plantation in Augusta, who has been recently been struggling with his game. Wes is a great supporter of the Blog and is eager to participate in the Invitational this fall.
Steve Stricker
Bill Haas
Jason Dufner
Zach Johnosn
277 (-11)

Daniel Hardy (Lexington, SC) - Daniel is the reigning 2011 Invitational co-champion. He is currently working on his newly acquired desk-job more than his golf game. This may be affecting his wing pounding sessions as well, but we know the big guy will be ready when he hits the first tee.
Tiger Woods
Keegan Bradley
Jason Dufner
Dustin Johnson
288 (Even)

Tim Hoskins (Covington, KY) - this Wildcat fan played small college basketball in Kentucky and played six years professional basketball overseas. He claims to be a near-scratch golfer out of Ponderosa CC and believes he has put together the winning team. He plans to add his portion of the $675 prize money into his account the day following the Invitational.
Tiger Woods
Keegan Bradley
Matt Kuchar
Ernie Els
280 (-8)

Ricky Jackson (West Columbia, SC) - this cagey veteran picker seems to shine most brightly in our contests. He is a proven winner in football contests, and is trying his hand at this one. His teams have also done well in the Invitiational the past three years. As a contractor, he seems to be able to nail things down, or ...hit the nail on the head.... or something!
Adam Scott
Keegan Bradley
Jason Dufner
Dustin Johnson

Pete Kleemoff (Lexington, SC) - better known here on the Blog as "Bigfoot", we finally got an official photo of him. Hunter Mahan
Bill Haas
Matt Kuchar
Dustin Johnson
281 (-7)

Robert Peeler (Gaffney, SC) - While attending Clemson University to finish his degree, Robert is still working hard to become a professional caddy. Few people know the number of golf stats that he keeps in his mental filing system. We have no doubt that this ability will help him realize his dream of caddying on the PGA tour one day.
Graeme McDowell
Jonathan Byrd
Jason Dufner
Dustin Johnson
283 (-5)

Kevin Peterman (Greenville, SC) - This young man with a criminal justice degree from USC now works at Thirsty Fellow. He loves golf, but says his score is a crime. Tiger Woods
Phil Mickelson
Jim Furyk
Ernie Els
282 (-6)

Michael Phelps (Augusta, GA) - He sure wouldn't float like the Olympic swimmer because he sells bricks for a living. He is a part-time professional caddy at Sage Valley, and will begin caddying at Augusta National within the next few months. Among his non-golfing passions are cheering for the Atlanta Falcons and driving race cars. In fact, he will be racing to Atlanta for Monday Night Football after the tournament on Sept. 17. He has filled his team roster for the Invitational with cousins Ernie and Lamar....keeping it all in the family, eh?
