Meet Invitational Player Russell Glover

Russell Glover is a golfer with a long history as a PGA professional  and an excellent ball striker in the state of South Carolina...and overseas.  As a military man stationed in Frankfurt, Germany in 1968, he entered the Frankfurt Open.  The capable player won his first pro tournament, and the $50 cash prize that went along with the title.  Those of us who know Russell also know that he loves a good time.  We can be pretty sure he hosted a $50 celebration, complete with well-known local refreshments!  In 1974, Russell was back in the states competing in the South Carolina Open.  He won that event, snapping the string of brother Randy's five straight SC Open wins.  In 1976, Russell became a PGA professional.  In the mid-90's, he became the head pro at The Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree. He has served as the Director of Golf at Crickentree's sister club - The Country Club of South Carolina at Florence for the past 10 years.
Several years ago, Russell and The Director participated in a pro-am event in North Carolina.  Russell posted a 67 for the day.  Their team lost by one stroke, causing Russell to give John some grief for not helping out a little more on the course.  John was compelled to remind Russell that he could have boosted the team to the win.  "You had 5 birdie opportunities under 5 feet...You could have made a couple of those".  Ultimately, these two gentlemen settled their difference in opinion regarding the results over a "cold one" in the tradition of good sports everywhere.
Russell will be playing in The Invitational with his teammates Steve Pachol and June Raines.  Steve is one of the top senior amateur players in South Carolina and a member at Woodlands CC.  June is the well-known former USC baseball coach and Gamecock Hall-of-Famer.  Can these 3 experienced veterans win the championship?  Absolutely!   ...oh and if you run into Russell, ask him how he used his scuba-diving skills to save a cart that John forgot to put the brake on.  Sounds like a future story on the blog to me!!
